St. Vincent de Paul (1581 – 1660)
The name Vincent means a winner, conqueror. St. Vincent de Paul lived through a time lasting little less than a century like a winner. How could a man of low birth of peasant stock circulate and be accepted by society people of high noble birth? Because the man was a Vincent. Like a sure winner he held in his hands the most powerful arms, the arms of Gospel maxims before which enemies such as power, ambition, greed and love of the world went down on their knees before the personal life of sanctity of Vincent. He was Vincent in his life and his contemporaries of high rank saw in him an incorrupt and incorruptible person. They fell behind him and followed him. He became a Vincent for them as well.
St. Vincent de Paul was born in Pouy, a little village near Dax in the Landes district of Gascony. His parents were jean de Paul and Bertrand de mores. The date of birth commonly accepted today is 24 April 1581. He was very intelligent boy. He had a longing for learning. His circumstances demanded him to be both student as well as teacher at the same time. However after the completion of required studies he was ordained a priest on April 25, 1660. After being ordained as a priest, he had a great zeal for soul. He worked among the beggers, and succeeded in the eradication of poverty in a great extend, which even the government of France seems to have failed. He also worked among the galley slaves, foundlings, injured soldiers and so on. In the year 1625, he founded the Congregation of the Mission and today its members are working in more than hundred countries.
On 27 Sept 1660 at the age of 84 Vincent Left this world in the presence of a large weeping congregation. The process of his beatification lasted for 69 years. Benedict XIII proclaimed him Blessed on 13 August 1729, and he was cononized on 16 June 1737. Pope Leo XIII proclaimed him patron of all charitable works.
